I’m competing for single working mother of the year award! Here’s how the day played out. Wake up to eldest son dressed and packed for camp…he’s even packed his own snacks for bus and lunch (+ 5 points for good parenting…or is that – 5 points for waking up too late?). Make a head decision not to shower (+ 5 points for being eco friendly) and put on gym clothes instead. Gym clothes people…are you hearing me? Like all those cool moms who pitch up everyday in their sporty spice outfits! I am going to start exercising again (+20 points for putting on gym clothes and +10 for being seen at school in them!). Take both boys to school and watch fondly as eldest adds one of the biggest bags to the line. Reassure him that all is going to be fine but that we’ll miss him too. Start chatting to a friend who I’d love to see for coffee. She asks when my open spaces are. I casually start explaining that while my teaching days are set, my gigs are all over the show and that currently I am rehearsing quite a bit. I stop mid sentence. REHEARSING!!!!!

Suddenly it hits me. I have a 5 hour rehearsal in Camps Bay, starting at 10am. I hug my eldest and explain that I cannot see him onto the bus (- 5 points). I drop my  youngest in Grade R classroom upon which he announces he is cold. I race home and fetch warm top (+ 5 points), back to school to throw top over fence, kiss through the fence (+5 points)! Right…time to get moving. Home. Whip off gym clothes (-50 points), shower (-10 points), grab violin, into car and off I go. Arrive in Camps Bay 15 minutes early (20 points), eat rusks and cake (-20 points) and fake sanity for 5 hours 🎻(+10 points)!

By this time I’m actually feeling quite good again. I’ve made some nice music, driven the coast road home and can even fetch Joel early from aftercare (+15 points). I walk into aftercare to be told by Joel and the lady at aftercare that I had packed an empty lunchbox into his bag today (-50 points). The story goes on….Joel gets stung by a bee…I step on his foot….but actually it’s 20h47….and I’m lying in bed with my little man sleeping peacefully alongside me. I’m going to read a book for a change (+20) and I have to say….it could have been worse. I’m going to bed with a full and happy heart.
